Copper rivets are very versatile. They are both beautiful and durable, so they are widely used in apparel, leather goods, electronics and even construction.
This blog will be centered around copper rivets. Including considerations when using copper rivets, benefits of using copper rivets.

The Benefits of Using Copper Rivets
Copper rivets have a number of properties that make them popular in many applications.
- Excellent electrical conductivity: Copper is an excellent conductor and the use of copper rivets ensures low contact resistance and good current path.
- Good corrosion resistance: copper in the air will naturally form a layer of dense oxide film, can effectively resist most industrial corrosive environment.
- High thermal conductivity: copper has a high thermal conductivity (about twice that of aluminum), making it suitable for use as a thermal connection and thermal compensation assembly.
- Stable vibration resistance: copper can maintain good plasticity and resilience after riveting deformation, with high resistance to vibration loosening ability.
- Beautiful metallic texture: copper has a unique surface luster, which can form antique copper color, red copper color or bronze patina surface.
- Easy to process, easy to install: copper hardness is moderate, pulling core fracture is clear, the installation process is not easy to blow up the cap, deflection core, clamping claw jamming and other problems. There is also less wear and tear on the equipment.
- Environmentally friendly and recyclable: copper material has a high recycling value, the use of copper rivets can enhance the overall sustainability of the product and recycling economy, in line with modern green manufacturing standards.
- Match the copper-based structure or copper pipe connection more reliable: in the connection of copper base material (such as copper pipe, copper plate, copper terminals), the use of copper rivets can effectively prevent the potential difference corrosion, enhance the contact strength and life.

What to Consider after you Decide to Use opper Rivets?
Copper blind rivets have good electrical conductivity and corrosion resistance. However, due to the characteristics of copper material, there are some application limitations and installation risks when applying them. You should pay attention to the following 5 key points when using copper rivets:
1. Avoid galvanic corrosion
All metals have a certain degree of inertia, the ability of one metal to resist corrosion when in contact with other metals. Copper is one of the most inert metals, and as such it is usually not itself damaged by contact with other metals. However, copper rivets can cause corrosion of the material being riveted, especially when riveting aluminum and zinc materials. In addition, copper rivets can cause galvanic corrosion if the other metal is of similar or lesser mass than copper when in contact with steel materials.

- When using copper rivets in wet or electrolytic environments, you need to avoid potential differences with aluminum, stainless steel, etc. This can effectively avoid the occurrence of galvanic corrosion.
- Copper rivets are recommended for use on copper or similar materials. If other materials are to be riveted, the addition of insulating washers is optional.
2. The parent material should be selected to match the material
In addition to the need to consider the occurrence of galvanic corrosion, there is also the need to consider matching the hardness of the copper to the material being riveted.
The high hardness of copper makes it unsuitable for use in softer materials such as plastics or wood, where it may be pressed through or torn from the parent material during riveting. Conversely, when used in particularly hard materials (e.g. cold rolled steel), the copper rivets itself may be crushed and deformed.
Rivet manufacturer’s recommendation: Use copper rivets for joints between copper, brass, soft steel or thick solid sheet metal.

3. Avoid riveting in high temperature areas
Copper rivets are extremely thermally conductive. If copper rivets are installed near welded seams, high temperature furnaces or electrically heated components, heat transfer may cause the copper to prematurely soften and deform or induce thermal fatigue, or even abrade the surrounding plastic/insulation.
Therefore, copper rivets should be avoided when using copper rivets near high temperature sources or soldered after installation.
4. Attention to surface oxidation

Copper rivets are easily oxidized by airborne oxygen and moisture during use, forming a green patina (copper alkali carbonate) or black copper oxide, which affects the appearance and even interferes with electrical contact performance. It is recommended that copper blind rivets be used on internal or non-external parts of the product. Of course, there are solutions to this problem:
- If used in visible areas, tinned copper rivets should be selected or painted later.
- Electrical components are encapsulated after use with an antioxidant or varnish.
5. Unsuitable for using copper rivets on large structural loads
Compared to steel blind rivets, the shear and tensile strength of copper rivets is about 50% less. Therefore, copper blind rivets are not suitable for structural bearing points, such as pressure brackets, vehicle skeletons, steel structure hangers and so on. It is recommended that copper rivets be used only for functional structural connections or for secondary fixing.
