Note: All dimensions are in millimeters unless otherwise stated. For Q-Lock rivets, the grip range follows the catalog's Min / Mid / Max format. Final selection should be confirmed according to actual sheet thickness, hole diameter, material combination, head type, installation tool, and required tensile / shear performance.

Steps of Blind Rivet Installation

  1. Insert the rivet into the pre-drilled hole, ensuring that the rivet head sits flush against the workpiece.
  2. Place the rivet gun’s nozzle over the rivet mandrel and hold the tool vertically.
  3. Activate the rivet gun and pull the rivet mandrel to expand the rivet body and secure the workpiece.
  4. Once the rivet mandrel breaks off, the riveting is complete. Check that the rivet is secure and flush.

Application

Applications of 6.4 mm Pop Rivets

6.4-millimeter pop rivets are designed for heavy-duty and safety-critical structural applications. They are particularly suitable for situations where 6.0-millimeter rivets no longer meet the requirements for long-term load stability and structural redundancy.

Heavy Equipment Manufacturing

Heavy-Duty Structural End Connections

6.4 mm pop rivets are primarily used for structural connections requiring higher strength. Unlike 6 mm rivets, which are more commonly used for “medium- to heavy-duty structures,” they provide higher shear load-bearing capacity and more stable long-term connection performance.

Agricultural Equipment

Equipment Subject to High-Impact Conditions

Compared to 6 mm rivets, which are better suited for “conventional dynamic loads,” 6.4 mm pop rivets are more suitable for conditions involving continuous impact and long-term vibration. 6.4 mm pop rivets feature a larger clamping area, delivering more stable performance in environments subject to continuous vibration or impact. They are suitable for equipment structures that undergo long-term operation under dynamic loads.

Industrial Brackets & Supports

Thick Plate and Multi-Layer Material Laminate Joints

6.4 mm pop rivets are better suited for ultra-thick or complex multi-layer laminated structures, offering greater assembly tolerance and more space for deformation-based locking. They provide a more reliable deformation-locking effect.

Blind Rivets for Truck and Trailer Industry

In the field of vehicle structures, unlike 6 mm rivets used for “secondary structures,” 6.4 mm pop rivets are more commonly used in critical structural joints that bear higher loads, such as areas subject to concentrated stress. They enhance overall structural stability and fatigue resistance.

1.What grip range do I need for 6.4mm rivets on 1/2 inch material?

You need to select a 6.4 mm hollow rivet with a total thickness of 12.7 mm.

6.4 mm pop rivets can join a wide variety of industrial materials and are particularly suitable for aluminum sheets, steel sheets, stainless steel sheets, galvanized sheets, and multi-layer metal sheet structures. The 6.4 mm diameter is a larger size, making it more suitable for medium- to thick-gauge sheets, heavy-duty structures, and industrial applications that require high joint strength.

Common protective surface treatments for 6.4 mm pop rivets include galvanizing, passivation, spray coating, powder coating, custom RAL colors, zinc-nickel alloy, and high-corrosion-resistant coatings. The specific treatment method selected depends on the rivet material, operating environment, and corrosion resistance rating.

5mm rivets are suitable for standard metal sheets, equipment enclosures, cabinet panels, or medium-strength sheet metal joints.

Meanwhile, 6.4mm pop rivets are better suited for thick metal sheets, multi-layer metal sheets, high-vibration structures, heavy-duty equipment, or critical load-bearing locations.

When using 6.4 mm pop rivets in corrosive environments, special attention should be paid to the rivet material, mandrel material, surface treatment, compatibility with the base material, and the risk of electrochemical corrosion.

In outdoor, humid, or coastal environments, it is recommended to select stainless steel rivets, which offer better corrosion resistance than standard steel rivets. In more severe environments, 316 stainless steel, passivation treatment, zinc-nickel alloy, or other highly corrosion-resistant surface treatment options are recommended.

Secondly, it is also important to ensure that the rivet material is compatible with the materials being joined. For aluminum sheet connections, aluminum rivets or rivets with suitable coatings are recommended to prevent electrochemical corrosion. For steel structure connections, consider steel or stainless steel rivets, combined with galvanization, high-corrosion-resistant coatings, or passivation treatment.

Comparing threaded inserts versus 6.4mm pop rivets for sheet metal?

Rivet Nut vs Pop Rivet

In sheet metal assembly, threaded inserts and 6.4mm pop rivets share the common feature of allowing single-sided installation. The difference lies in their intended uses. Threaded inserts are better suited for structural locations that require subsequent maintenance, disassembly, or bolt installation. Meanwhile, 6.4mm pop rivets are better suited for sheet metal joints that require long-term fastening and infrequent disassembly.
