What is a Bulb Tite Rivet?
Bulb Tite Rivets consist of a rivet body, a mandrel, a rivet head, a shear point, and an optional EPDM sealing washer.
Compared to standard pop rivets, their most distinctive feature is that after riveting, the rivet tail forms a three-lobed bulb structure on the back of the workpiece.
This expanded bearing surface distributes the clamping load more evenly, effectively reducing the likelihood of tearing or perforation in thin sheets, plastic sheets, composite materials, and other brittle substrates.
How to choose the right bulb tite rivet for aluminum sheets?
1. First, confirm the total thickness of the aluminum sheet
You can’t just look at the thickness of a single layer of aluminum sheet. You need to consider the total thickness.
2. Selecting the Riveting Range Based on Aluminum Sheet Thickness
Different aluminum sheet thicknesses correspond to different riveting ranges.
3.Selecting the Rivet Diameter Based on Hole Size
Aluminum sheets are relatively soft; if the hole is too large, it can cause the rivet to wobble, result in an unstable seal from the washer, and lead to inconsistent forming on the reverse side.
4.Prefer the Aluminum / Aluminum material combination
The combination of an aluminum riveted body and an aluminum core rod offers better compatibility. Aluminum plates pair better with aluminum riveted bodies and are lighter in weight.
5.Select the head type based on the surface requirements of the aluminum sheet
Round heads are highly versatile, and their large flanges provide a larger load-bearing surface area. Countersunk heads require pre-drilled countersinks
6.For outdoor aluminum panels, we recommend using EPDM washers
For outdoor aluminum panel applications, when fastening points require additional moisture protection, we recommend using BulbTite rivets with EPDM washers. This significantly enhances water resistance.

Limitations of Bulb Tite Rivets
- Relatively high cost
Bulb Tite Rivets have a more complex structure. They place higher demands on rivet body forming, mandrel fit, back-side stability, and washer assembly.
- Higher requirements for installation tools and rivet heads
Bulb Tite Rivets require a suitable riveting tool to form a stable three-lobed head
- An EPDM washer does not guarantee “absolute waterproofing.”
The sealing effectiveness depends on numerous factors, including pore size, washer dimensions, material surface, and the application environment. To achieve a high level of waterproofing, every step must be executed flawlessly.
- There must be sufficient clearance on the back side
The advantage of Bulb Tite Rivets lies in their three-lobed expansion structure on the back side. If there is insufficient clearance on the back side, expansion may be impeded, resulting in incomplete back-side support
How do bulb tite rivets compare to standard rivets in strength?
| Strength Factor | Standard Blind Rivets | Bulb Tite Rivets |
|---|---|---|
| Tensile Strength | Depends on material and diameter. Standard steel blind rivets may offer higher tensile strength in some specifications. | Depends on specification and material. They are not necessarily stronger than all standard blind rivets. |
