Case Study: Aluminium Blind Rivets for Trailer ABS Parts

A US-based manufacturer of travel trailer accessories is seeking all-aluminium blind rivets for ABS components intended for outdoor use. These are primarily intended for use in connecting to aluminium components. The customer is seeking options with silver and charcoal black rivet heads.

For this application, Rivmate recommends the AA48080 and AA48100 open-type dome-head all-aluminium blind rivets as the primary options for fitting trials, whilst also evaluating the AAF48080 sealed-type alternative based on the actual clamping thickness.

Client Detail Requirements

The customer has explicitly specified a nominal diameter of 4.8 mm (3/16 inch) for the rivets. A dome-head design is to be used, with both the rivet body and the mandrel made of aluminium. The two target specifications are 4.8 × 8.0 mm with a clamping range of 2.5–4.0 mm, and 4.8 × 10.0 mm with a clamping range of 4.0–6.0 mm. Each specification requires two surface finishes: a natural silver polish and a custom black head.

The black head surface treatment must match the client’s charcoal black colour. The client can provide a colour sample and wishes to evaluate either spray painting or powder coating processes. Particular attention is to be paid to durability in outdoor UV, wind and rain conditions, as well as salt spray test data. Additionally, the client has proposed including sealed, all-aluminium rivets as an alternative option for weather resistance.

The client not only wishes to conduct fit and installation tests for each of the four specifications and colour combinations—10 pieces of each, totalling 40 pieces—with the sealed type provided as an optional additional sample, but also emphasises that subsequent bulk procurement is conditional upon the success of these tests. There are numerous requirements regarding the quotation, including minimum order quantities for different specifications and colours, alloy grades for the rivet body and mandrel, sample and production lead times, packaging labels, and relevant compliance documentation.

Customer Pain Points

1. The selected rivets must match the rivet diameter to the actual clamping thickness.
The joint between ABS parts and aluminum components must fall within the clamping range specified for the corresponding model; specifications should not be determined solely by rivet length.
2. When joining plastic and metal, both the fastening effectiveness and localized stress on the ABS must be considered.
During trial assembly, check the fit of the head, the formation of the back surface, and the condition around the hole to avoid merely confirming that the rivet can be inserted while overlooking component deformation or damage.
3. Black rivet heads must not only meet aesthetic matching requirements but also withstand outdoor exposure.
A similar color does not necessarily indicate suitable weather resistance of the coating. Color, coating integrity after installation, and environmental durability must be evaluated separately.
4. For “sealed” variants, the clamping range and sealing performance must still be re-verified.
Verify rain resistance using the actual components; do not assume the entire connection is waterproof based solely on the “sealed” designation.

Travel Trailer ABS

Rivmate Riveting Solutinos

To meet the customer’s requirement for connecting ABS parts to aluminum components in travel trailers, RIVMATE recommends using 4.8 mm open-end dome-head all-aluminum blind rivets. To ensure visual consistency, two riveting options are available: standard silver and custom charcoal black rivet heads.

  •  Precise Specification Matching
We recommend the AA48080 and AA48100 all-aluminum pop rivets, which are designed to accommodate different clamping thicknesses and ensure proper compatibility between ABS and aluminum components.
  • Custom Black Rivets with Special Heads
The appearance is customized based on the customer’s charcoal black color sample, and we evaluate spray painting or powder coating processes to balance color matching with outdoor weather resistance requirements.
  •  Alternative Sealed, Rain-Resistant Solution
The AAF48080 sealed, all-aluminum rivet is offered as an alternative, with its rain resistance evaluated through actual installation testing.
  •  Sample Testing and Bulk Customization
We support sample testing across multiple specifications and colors. After confirming installation results, we provide bulk customization solutions covering materials, surface treatments, and packaging.

Why is it so highly recommended

  • The AA48080 and AA48100 open-end rivets correspond to the two clamping ranges specified by the customer. Select the appropriate length based on the actual joint thickness to minimize mismatches caused by selecting rivets based solely on appearance or nominal dimensions. Including the recommended hole diameter and round head size in the inspection ensures that sample testing covers actual installation conditions.
  • The all-aluminum construction meets the customer’s requirements for the rivet body and mandrel materials. The natural polished version meets the requirement for a silver appearance. Specific alloy grades must be specified in the supply specifications; “all-aluminum” should not be directly equated with any specific grade.
  • The black head design option is being evaluated based on the customer’s color sample. This is primarily because the exposed rivet head must harmonize with the charcoal black appearance of the ABS component. The coating condition after test riveting must also be inspected. Only by combining these two factors can appearance verification and installation compatibility be ensured. Outdoor durability must still be evaluated based on the selected coating and corresponding test conditions.
  • AAF48080 is suitable as a comparison for sealed structures; however, its maximum clamping capacity is lower than that of AA48080, so it cannot directly replace all installation locations. First, screen by thickness, then conduct rain resistance verification on actual assemblies to ensure both connection compatibility and outdoor usage requirements are met.
