Case Study: Structural Blind Rivet for Window Frame

The customer needs us to provide a rivet for riveting stainless steel window panels and their frames. The joint must be able to withstand high structural loads over the long term, while accommodating variations in panel thickness and maintaining a consistent clamping force.

Customer Requirements and Project Expectations

The customer wishes to use high-strength structural blind rivets to secure a 40-kg stainless steel window sash to the exterior frame. The thicknesses at these connection points are 7.5 mm and 4.5 mm, respectively, and both consist of a three-layer stainless steel structure. The selected rivets must not only meet requirements for mechanical strength and secure clamping but also accommodate different thicknesses and facilitate easy installation.

The customer is concerned not only with the compatibility of the clamping range for individual rivets but also with achieving high connection strength while minimizing the risk of tool compatibility issues.

Client Detail Requirements

The client’s key requirements include:

  • The strength of the rivet must meet the load-bearing requirements for a 40 kg workpiece
Standard pop rivets do not meet these requirements; structural rivets are needed to provide reliable tensile and shear strength.

  • Securely clamp three layers of stainless steel sheets
Prevent gaps and loosening between the three layers of stainless steel sheets

  • Capable of accommodating two different joint thicknesses: 4.5 mm and 7.5 mm
A single rivet specification is used to cover different riveting ranges, reducing procurement costs and inventory.

  • Installation must be simple
Since customers are not experts in riveting operations, complex riveting processes and tool compatibility issues must be avoided to prevent riveting failures.

Customer Pain Points

1. The workpiece is relatively heavy

The workpiece to be joined weighs approximately 40 kg, which cannot be secured using standard pop rivets. High strength and stability are required.

2. The workpiece to be joined has two different connection thicknesses
The total thickness at the top is 7.5 mm, while the total thickness at the sides is 4.5 mm—a difference of 3 mm. The correct riveting range must be selected.

3. Both connection points consist of a three-layer stainless steel plate structure
High standards are required for hole alignment and clamping effectiveness. If the wrong rivet is selected, it may result in gaps between the three layers of plate, looseness, and inadequate forming.

4. The customer is unfamiliar with riveting and installation procedures
The customer lacks understanding of riveting operations. Therefore, while ensuring rivet strength, it is also necessary to reduce the complexity of tool adaptation and installation procedures.

Stable Bulk Supply for Interlock Blind Rivet

Rivmate Riveting Solutinos

Based on an analysis of the materials used in the stainless steel windows and frames, the overall thickness, and the installation conditions, Rivmate recommends using 6.4 × 14 mm stainless steel internal-lock structural blind rivets.

Compared to hemlock rivets, which have limited riveting ranges, interlock blind rivets and monobolt blind rivets are better suited for high-strength connections involving multiple layers of material.

Taking into account the customer’s lack of familiarity with structural rivet installation, Rivmate prioritizes the internal-lock solution. This reduces the difficulty and requirements for tool adaptation during installation while providing higher connection stability, rivet core retention, and mechanical performance.

Item Recommended Solution
Rivet Type Interlock Blind Rivets
Application Position Three-layer sheet connection at the top and sides of the stainless steel window frame
Recommended Size 6.4 × 14 mm
Applicable Joint Thickness 4.5 mm and 7.5 mm
Rivet Material Stainless Steel
Locking Method Internal Mandrel Lock
Installation Method One-Sided Installation with No Backside Access Required
Tool Requirements No Special Nosepiece Adaptation Required for the Riveting Tool
Mechanical Performance Meets the Connection Strength Required for an Approximately 40 kg Assembly
Main Purpose Use One Rivet Size for Both the Top and Side Installation Positions, Reducing Material Types and the Risk of Incorrect Installation

Why Interlock Blind Rivets Are Recommended

  • Single-side installation improves assembly efficiency.

  • After installation, the core of the self-locking rivet is mechanically locked inside the rivet body, forming a stable structural connection.

  • A single size of self-locking rivet can cover two installation positions, reducing inventory and costs.

  • For customers unfamiliar with installation procedures, the self-locking design minimizes the need to select the correct gun head or adapt tools, thereby simplifying on-site installation.

Rivmate Provides Rivet Selection Recommendations for Your Project

Selecting the right rivet for your project is essential to achieving the desired riveting results. Even rivets of the same diameter can vary in mechanical properties. You should select the appropriate rivet based on the workpiece material, joint thickness, hole diameter, and load conditions.

Rivmate can help you evaluate the most suitable blind rivet solution for your specific application using the following information:

  • Workpiece drawings or photos of the joint location
  • Material and thickness of each layer of sheet metal
  • Total joint thickness
  • Mounting hole diameter
  • Estimated purchase quantity
  • Load, vibration, or corrosion resistance requirements
  • Currently used riveting tools
  • Specific installation challenges to be addressed
