Ultomate Guide to Structural Rivets
What are structural rivets? The rivet is a high strength blind rivet. This type of blind rivet is ideal for super-strong seismic solutions. Structural Blind Rivets are widely used in heavy duty applications, they are widely used in heavy duty applications such as the manufacture of utility vehicles, trucks, trains, truck trailers, security fencing and many other applications.
By reading this post, you will learn everything basic about structural rivets. This includes common types, features, applications, and more.

What are Structural Blind Rivets?
Structural rivets (structural blind rivets) are essentially a type of blind rivet. Therefore structural rivets are also used to join two or more pieces of material. Structural blind rivets are rivets specifically designed with a locking mechanism to hold the mandrel in place.

The image above shows the installation of structural interlock rivets.
As with standard blind rivets, structural rivets cause the body to expand during installation, thus sandwiching the material between the ends of the subject. The difference is that the structural rivet will provide a stronger connection strength by leaving a portion of its mandrel inside the rivet body.
Main Types of Structural Blind Rivets
Mono-Lock Blind Rivets (Monobolt,Magna-Lok,Hucklok)
Rivmate’s multi grip and hemlok rivets are a rivet fastener. This rivet has a unique internal locking mechanism that provides high resistance to vibration and moisture. Installation is quick and easy with a structural rivet gun. Because installing them requires a lot of pressure, standard rivet guns are not equipped with the correct jaws nor the force or stroke required to continuously install structural rivets.

Standard Structural Blind Rivets (Hemlok Rivets,Bom Rivets)
The Rivmate monolock and nowlock structural rivets utilize a double-locking system that secures the material to both sides of the panel for high strength; providing shock and weather resistant joints. It has a non-protruding blind side bulb that spreads the load while avoiding pull-through, with a limited material grip range compared to multi grip rivets. Can be easily installed with a structural rivet tool, as standard rivet guns are not designed to install structural rivets in large quantities. Also known as Orlock ® rivets or Hemlok ® rivets.

Bulbtight Triirm Rivets (Bulb-Tite,Tri-Bulb,Tri-Fold)
These rivets form three split tail shapes during installation.Rivmate’s bulbtight trifirm rivets and Bulb -Tite® and other tri-fold structural rivets distribute clamping forces through their anchor vanes and combine with gaskets to provide weatherproof joints. Ideal for auto body fabrication using composite panels associated with refrigerated or Pantech trucks. Select Bulbtite rivet sizes are used to install safety roof anchors, including fall arrest systems + rope access systems.

How do Structural Rivets Work?
Structural rivets work similarly to standard rivets, but are slightly different. Structural rivets leave a portion of the mandrel in the rivet body after installation. This helps to improve the strength of the rivet while increasing the tensile strength.
Below is a schematic of how the main types of structural rivets work.

- Excellent hole filling properties
- Large riveting range
- High shear and tensile strength
- Mechanical core locking mechanism

- Tapered mandrel head for quick and easy installation.
- Unique bulbing system for superior blind side strength and increasing clamping force with workpiece.
- Locking device on mandrel strength

- Large blind side contact area, suitable for installation in thin or compressible materials where controlled strength is required.
- Unique groove on mandrel, completely fit for rivet body, has an effect on locking and sealing.
What are the Advantages of Rivmate Structural Rivets?
- Single side assembly allows for quick installation without access to the rear.
- Forms a mechanical, permanent joint solution.
- Excellent vibration and shock resistance.
- Higher shear and tensile strength.
- Flexible design and variety of types, materials, etc. for most applications.
- Can be used for thick materials and high load applications.

Best Rivet Tools for Structural Rivets
What if you choose the best rivet installation tool for your structural riveting project? This depends largely on the type of rivets you are using. At Rivmate, we stock a wide range of affordable structural rivet guns, and these solutions have been tested in a rivet gun lab to ensure quality and value. Our website has extensive information covering most tools for you to view. For further discussion, please contact us.
There are two main types of Rivmate structural rivet tools:
- H6065 Lockbolt Tool (for lockbolts and hemlock rivets)
- P Series Blind Rivet Tool (for Monobolts and Hemlock Rivets)

Rivmate’s H6065 Lockbolt tool is suitable for installing lockbolt and hemlok rivets, all you need to do is simply replace the nose assembly.
For jobs where rivets are frequently installed, using a pneumatic rivet gun is the most suitable and easiest option. Pneumatic rivet guns provide fast installation and consistent installation results.
If you want to know more about H6065 Lockbolt tool, please check this page.

This rivet gun is perfect for installing conventional structural rivets. If your business requires the installation of structural rivets and standard rivets, then there’s no better place to use Rivmate’s P-Series Rivet Gun.
The benefits of the P-Series Rivet Gun are ease of use, affordability, and no physical labor required. And they will also install to a set pressure/stroke.
